STILFONTEIN

Stilfontein, meaning 'still fountain', lies between Klerksdorp and Potchefstroom, roughly 130 kilometres from Johannesburg.  The town was established in 1949.

It is a mining town that forms part of what the KOSH area (Klerksdorp, Orkney, Stilfontein, Hartebeestfontein) - a group of gold mining towns. The development of gold mines was made possible by the perseverance of Jack Scott who discovered and developed the outcropping gold reef.

A totally unprecedented earthquake shook the area in 2005, damaging not only buildings in Stilfontein, but the mines as well. The Simmer and Jack Mines took over the mines, disaster struck again on the 23 March 2006 when a fire trapped 8 miners underground at the Buffelsfontein mine.

A visit to the town is an ideal way to find out more about gold mining in the country. Both Hartebeestfontein and Stilfontein provide fascinating tours, including being able to see how gold is poured.

Stilfontein is on the N12 Treasure route, covering the central part of the North West Province and including all the mining  towns along the N12 and N14 - Carletonville, Foch Ville, and Orkney.

Stilfontein is renowned for its hospitality and excellent sports facilities, and hosts the annual Rose Festival in spring when the famous Stilfontein roses bloom.

Attractions include the Hartebeestfontein Gold Mine where one can witness a gold pouring session and join a mine tour.

Golden Village Project

A social community outreach and rehabilitation centre for miners and their families, offering mine tours, arts and crafts, including superb leatherwork. A troupe of young traditional dancers can be booked for special occasions.

Close by, Klerksdorp is worth a visit where you can go down a mine shaft, visit the Klerksdorp Museum, the Faan Meintjies Nature Reserve, walk the Oudorp hiking trail or visit the Klerksdorp Dam just outside of town.
